Economic Recovery

Posted by Norm on April 14th, 2010

Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve Chairman said today that the economy should continue to improve at a “moderate pace” this year.  The discouraging fact is that 8.5 million jobs were lost over the past two years, and 44% of the unemployed have been out of work for 6 months or more.  Skeptics claim that Bernanke has been wrong in his previous predictions and that the economy has not even yet begun to recover.

I don’t like to be unrealistic, but I do like to see a positive message coming from high-ranking officials.  Even if the economy is still in the dumps, I’m hoping that encouraging the public will at least motivate some spending to stimulate the market.  What I’m fearful of is that the true unemployment numbers will be covered up in an attempt to show that steps are being taken towards recovery.

Layoff Report

Posted by Norm on March 24th, 2010

According to Forbes.com, the number of unemployment claims took a small dip.  This may reflect that the economy is beginning to go through a slow recovery process.  Several companies are still going through layoffs, and there are still more than 11 million people receiving unemployment benefits, but the numbers are improving.

My initial reaction upon seeing this report encouraged me until I saw that the layoffs were still mainly affecting middle America.  This means that the middle income worker is still going to be living in fear of losing his means of income.  What would encourage me is to see that 11 million number go down below the double digits.
